When we work with home and business owners on a pergola project, one of the first selections we talk through is the roof design. This is because the roof plays a huge role in how the outdoor space looks, feels, and functions. There are several pergola roof types available. Each one offers a different level of shade, protection, and flexibility.
Here are the most common pergola roof options we install at Innov8 Outdoors: motorized louvered, fixed louvered, and solid insulated panel roofs. We want to help you understand the differences so you can choose the option that makes the most sense for your outdoor living space.
Why the Roof Matters When Designing a Pergola
The roof is the part of the design that defines how the space performs. It influences everything from comfort and airflow to how the space handles the sun, rain, and changing weather. The pergola roof also affects how much day-to-day involvement the space requires. Some systems offer adjustable control, while others are designed to stay in place and work without much thought. In both residential and commercial settings, that is an important distinction.
Choosing the right roof system helps make sure the pergola works the way you expect it to. Let’s break down each of the pergola roof types and see how each one functions.

R-BLADE Motorized Louver System
Our most-installed pergola roof type is the R-BLADE motorized louvered roof system. This option features louvers that open and close at the press of a button, giving you full control over your space.
If we had to pick just a handful of reasons why the automatic louvers are the most popular, here’s what we’d say:
- Having more control over the outdoor environment. Open the louvers for the sun when you want it, and close them for shade when you don’t.
- The weather sensor that automatically adjusts the louvers to the optimal position for wind and closes them for rain.
- The gapless louver and integrated gutter design prevents leaks. They drain water away from the pergola.
We recommend this roof type for homeowners who want a flexible shade solution. We’ve installed the R-BLADE system on pool decks, over outdoor kitchens, and to cover other entertainment spaces. The motorized louvers are also huge bonus for restaurant patios or other commercial spaces with staff who can operate the pergola to enhance guest experience.

R-BREEZE Fixed Louvered Roof
Up next is the R-BREEZE. While still a louvered roof option, the louvers are set in a fixed position and do not move. In the design phase, you can choose between two options for the slat positions: angled at 55° or straight at 90°.
Although the fixed louvered pergola roof doesn’t provide as much protection from rain, it does offer some. In addition, you’ll get partial shade from the sun, especially if you opt for the 55° louver position. Here are a few other reasons why our clients choose this pergola roof type:
- Sleek, architectural design with clean lines. The stationary louvers offer a more “traditional” pergola look.
- Because the louvers don’t move, the R-BREEZE doesn’t require any operation. It’s a great option for unstaffed commercial spaces like courtyards and public patios.
- With fewer electrical components, this system is extremely low-maintenance.
Typically, we present the R-BREEZE fixed louvered roof pergola as a shade solution for commercial spaces. For example, we’ve installed this system in outlet malls and shared patios at condominiums. Both are high-traffic areas where simplicity is valuable. This pergola roof type can also benefit homeowners who desire a “set it and forget it” option.

R-SHADE Solid Insulated Panel System
And lastly, the R-SHADE solid roof system. Often referred to as a patio cover, this is a solid roof that offers full coverage. Instead of louvers or slats, this pergola roof type is made up of stationary insulated panels. The R-SHADE is an amazing option for both home and business owners! Here’s why:
- The solid roof design provides maximum shade and weather protection. An integrated gutter system prevents water from sitting on top of the structure when it rains.
- The insulated panels help reduce heat, making a noticeable difference in temperature beneath the pergola versus standing in direct sunlight.
The R-SHADE insulated panel roof system is optimal for spaces that need consistent protection from weather. Think walkways, building entrances, outdoor kitchen areas, or seating areas. Spaces that get year-round use can also benefit from the R-SHADE, especially with the addition of screens and heaters to combat the chill of the cooler months.

How to Choose the Right Pergola Roof Type
There’s no one-size-fits-all answer when it comes to pergola roof types. The right choice depends on how you plan to use the space, the level of control you want, and whether the pergola is for a home or a commercial setting. Each option has its place, and when chosen thoughtfully, it can completely change how an outdoor space is used.
At Innov8 Outdoors, we help clients compare options, understand the pros and cons, and design pergolas that actually work for their lifestyle or business. If you’re starting to plan a pergola and want help choosing the right roof, we’re happy to walk you through it.
