To give the homeowner complete control over the sun, shade, and privacy on their deck, we installed the R-BLADE motorized louvered pergola with integrated retractable screens. At the touch of a button, the pergola louvers open for sun when the want it, or close for shade when they don’t. Similarly, when the screens are up, the view stays completely unobstructed. When down, they block the sun, add privacy from neighbors and boat traffic, and even cut down the wind that blows off the water.
Why the R-BLADE?
With three pergola roof options, what made the R-BLADE the best fit for this home? Because the deck connects directly to the living room through the patio door, keeping natural light in the house mattered just as much as blocking sun outside.
A solid roof would have solved the shade problem. However, it also would’ve blocked a lot of light from reaching the living room. The motorized louvers avoid that trade-off entirely. Open, they let light through. Closed, they block the sun. A fixed louvered roof was another option. It offers some shade, but not enough coverage for the hottest days. Due to the stationary design, it can’t adjust for rain or wind the way a motorized system can.
Connecting Indoor and Outdoor Living
Close the louvers and lower the screens, and this pergola works like a bug-proof three-season room. That means the patio doors can stay open, and moving between the living room and the deck hardly feels like stepping outside. And since the pergola doesn’t cover the whole deck, there’s still an open space with no roof overhead, for that true deck experience.
