How an R-SHADE Pergola Upgraded the Over Easy Patio at Dawley Farms

A restaurant patio shouldn’t depend on perfect weather to be valuable. What it should do is make the space more comfortable for guests and help the business use more of its space. That was the goal for Over Easy at Dawley Farms Village on the east side of Sioux Falls. The restaurant already had plans for an outdoor seating area, but needed options for functional shade and cover from the rain. In short, Innov8 Outdoors designed and installed a two-zone R-SHADE commercial patio pergola attached to the building. With a black frame and wood grain roof panels, the pergola gives the patio shade, rain protection, curb appeal, and seamless flow in and out of the restaurant.

This post focuses on the restaurant patio pergola at Over Easy. Innov8 also completed K-NOPY aluminum awnings on the retail side of the building as part of a separate phase of the Dawley Farms project, but we’ll talk more on that later!

Project Overview

Before: An Outdoor Seating Area With More Potential

creating a commercial pergola patio, pre-construction

Generally, making a restaurant patio comfortable becomes a priority after it’s been open for a couple of years. But not in this case! The pergola was an early addition during the design phase, which allowed the team to think through how the outdoor seating area would function before construction was even finished.

Looking at the building plans and the layout of the patio with the general contractor, business owner, and engineer, we were able to work through the pergola attachment to the building, orientation, and select the finishes that would match the restaurant’s look and feel. Planning for the restaurant patio ahead of time makes it feel like a natural extension of the business.

Why an R-SHADE Pergola Made Sense

The R-SHADE is an insulated panel pergola system, which makes it a strong fit for commercial patio projects. Unlike a motorized louvered pergola, the R-SHADE has a solid roof. This design gives the patio consistent shade and reliable cover. For a restaurant, this is a “set it and forget it” option that doesn’t create extra tasks, especially since staff members already have plenty to manage. A solid roof pergola adds comfort and protection without adding another system that needs to be opened, closed, or adjusted throughout the day.

For Over Easy, the R-SHADE solves several issues at once. It makes the patio more comfortable on sunny days, helps protect the seating area from light rain, and gives the restaurant a cleaner, more elevated look from the street.

During: Coordinating the Design, Engineering, and Installation

During installation, the two-zone R-SHADE pergola was attached to the building and aligned with the restaurant patio layout.

Commercial projects usually involve more coordination than a standard backyard installation. As mentioned, we teamed up with the restaurant owner, general contractor, engineer, and designer to make sure the pergola fit the building, the patio, and the larger property design. The two-zone layout is large enough to cover the outdoor seating area cleanly while staying connected to the architecture of the building. The black frame and wood grain roof panels make the finished structure feel intentional, not like an afterthought.

The Design: Black Frame With Wood Grain Roof Panels

The black frame gives the pergola a sharp, modern look that fits well with the commercial setting. The wood grain roof panels soften the structure and add warmth, which helps the patio feel more inviting for guests. Why does this matter? A patio needs to be durable and practical, but it also needs to feel welcoming. Guests should feel like the outdoor seating area is part of the experience, not just a few tables outside the building.

After: A More Comfortable Outdoor Dining Area

The finished patio now has a stronger sense of purpose! The pergola naturally extends the seating area outdoors and gives guests a more comfortable place to sit. Shade helps during sunny parts of the day, while the solid roof adds cover when the rain is threatening. From the outside, the pergola also improves curb appeal. It gives the restaurant more presence and helps the patio stand out as a designed part of the building.

That’s the value of a well-planned commercial patio pergola. It doesn’t just add cover, but makes the space feel more usable, more attractive, and more connected to the business.

A Better Guest Experience Starts Outside

The outdoor experience starts before a guest sits down. It starts when they see the building, notice the patio, and decide whether the space looks comfortable enough to use. A commercial patio pergola can help shape that first impression! It adds shade and cover, while signaling that the patio was planned with the guest experience in mind.

For Over Easy at Dawley Farms Village, the R-SHADE pergola gives the outdoor seating area a more polished look and a more practical purpose. It helps the restaurant make better use of its patio while fitting the overall design of the property.
