How a Custom Motorized Pergola Elevated David Henrie’s Home

A great outdoor space should feel like it belongs with the home. That was the goal for this project in Idaho, where Innov8 Outdoors worked with Azenco Outdoor, Progressive (MagnaTrack) Screens, Matthews Fan Co, and the Henrie family on a custom motorized pergola with screens for actor David Henrie’s home.

The home already had a beautiful concrete patio with direct access from both the master bedroom and cigar lounge. But the space needed more shade, privacy, protection, and a way to stay useful after the sun went down. In short, the solution was a stunning two-zone R-BLADE pergola system with MagnaTrack motorized screens, ceiling fans, LED strip lights, recessed lights, and a two-tone finish that matched the home.

Although the outdoor living space wasn’t part of the original build, it looks like it was there from the start.

Project Overview

  • Location: David Henrie’s property in Idaho
  • Project Type: R-BLADE motorized louvered pergola in Black and White
  • Client Goals: Create a comfortable and protected outdoor living space to enjoy with friends and family. Make it feel like a natural extension of the home.
  • Partnered With: Azenco Outdoor, Progressive Screens, and Matthews Fan Co.

The pergola is made up of two zones. Both zones are attached to the home and connected to each other, creating one clean outdoor living area over the existing concrete patio. One zone covers the patio door from the master bedroom, while the other covers the entrance from the cigar lounge. Together, they help connect the home to the outdoor kitchen and patio to the home in a much more useful way. The system also features:

  • Progressive MagnaTrack motorized screens
  • Matthews Fan Co ceiling fans
  • LED strip lights
  • Recessed lights
  • Custom cornice detail around the pergola perimeter

Every part of the project was carefully selected to make the patio more comfortable, private, and complete.

Before: A Beautiful Patio That Needed More Protection

Before custom motorized pergola installation, the existing concrete patio had a strong layout, but it needed shade, privacy, and more protection from the golf course side of the property.

As you can see, the patio already had a lot going for it! It was large, clean, and connected to important parts of the home. The doors from the master bedroom and cigar lounge made it easy to step outside and use the patio throughout the day. But, like many open patios, it had limits.

Without a cover, the space was more exposed to sun and weather, with no privacy on the golf course side of the property. There was also a need for protection from shanked golf balls flying over the fence. Essentially, this project wasn’t just about adding shade, but also about making the patio a more protected and functional space for the family.

The Goal: Make the Pergola Look Original to the Home

A custom motorized pergola with screens shouldn’t feel like an afterthought. With custom features, layout, and design, we create beautiful pergolas that are truly unique. For this home, one goal was to make the pergola look like part of the original design. That meant the colors, lines, and details had to work with the home’s architecture. As shown in the photos below, the black frame gives the pergola a clean, bold outline, and the white louvers help keep the space bright and tied into the home’s overall look.

The design also included a cornice around the pergola perimeter to help the structure feel more sophisticated. Instead of seeing a basic pergola frame, the cornice adds a modern, architectural look.

After the posts are set and anchored in place, the louvers are added to the top of the pergola, creating shade and covering the patio below.

This project came together smoothly because the team was aligned from the start. As a certified installer of their products, Azenco Outdoor called on us to install the pergola, screens, and fans. We worked directly with all of the manufacturers, the designer, and the Henrie family to bring this patio space to life.

The two R-BLADE pergola zones define the space with structure and shade. Because the louvers open and close, the family can enjoy the patio no matter the weather. The louvers open to let in more sun and airflow, and close for more shade and rain protection. In addition, the black frame and white louvers also helped the system feel sharp and modern without clashing with the home.

The Progressive MagnaTrack screens add privacy and protection, especially from stray golf balls coming from the golf course. When the screens are down, the patio feels more private and protected. And when they’re up, the space is open to the backyard and the view.

Fans from Matthews Fan Co help move air through the covered space, making the patio more comfortable on warm days. The LED strip lights and recessed lights add to the ambiance of the space in the evening. As a result, the patio is ready to use, even when the sun goes down!

After: A Finished Outdoor Room That Fits the Home

A black and white custom motorized pergola covers the patio, outdoor kitchen, and seating space.
Operable pergola louvers and motorized screens create an extra outdoor room that transitions smoothly from the indoors and outdoors.

The finished space feels complete. And most importantly, the pergola feels like it belongs.

Every outdoor space has its own needs. For this home, the need for shade, privacy, and protection were clear. Plus, the homeowners wanted it to look like it belonged with the home. That’s why a custom system made the most sense! A standard patio cover wouldn’t have solved everything. A basic pergola can’t offer the same control, and screens alone can’t create the same finished outdoor “room.” By combining the pergola, screens, fans, lighting, and custom design details, the space is much more usable. Now it’s a place to cook, sit, relax, entertain, and move between the home and patio with ease!
